I'm genuinely scared of the dentist. Will you judge me?

No. Dental fear is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about, and we hear it from new patients every week. Whether it's been one year or fifteen since your last visit, we focus on where you are now, not on why you stayed away.

Does going to the dentist actually hurt?

Most routine visits like checkups, cleanings, and fillings involve little to no pain, and we numb thoroughly before any treatment that could. We also use a topical gel before freezing so you barely feel the needle, and we check in with you constantly. If something is uncomfortable, you tell us and we stop.

What if I panic or need to stop partway through?

You can stop us at any point by raising your hand, a signal we agree on before we begin. We will pause immediately, let you breathe and reset, and continue only when you're ready. You stay in control of the appointment the entire time.

If the thought of a dental appointment makes your stomach tighten, you are far from alone, and you are welcome here exactly as you are. Plenty of people in West Abbotsford put off care for years because of fear, a bad experience as a kid, or the feeling of having no control once they’re in the chair. At Mount Lehman Dental, Dr. Aman Kalucha and the team treat nervous patients every single day, and the whole appointment is built around keeping you informed, comfortable, and in charge of the pace.

Fear of the dentist is normal, and we won’t judge you for it

Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people avoid treatment, and it has nothing to do with being weak or dramatic. Maybe a dentist hurt you once and didn’t stop when you asked. Maybe you hate the sounds, the smells, or the feeling of someone working in your mouth where you can’t see. Maybe it’s the cost, or the worry of being shamed for how long it’s been.

Whatever it is, you won’t get a lecture from us. It doesn’t matter whether your last visit was last year or fifteen years ago. We care about helping you from where you are right now. The shame and the “you should have come in sooner” speech are exactly the things that keep people away, so we leave them at the door.

What we actually do differently

Reassurance only goes so far. Here is concretely how we change the experience for an anxious patient.

We agree on a stop signal before we start

Before any treatment begins, we settle on a simple signal, usually raising your hand. The moment you raise it, we stop. Not “let me just finish this part.” We stop, take the instruments out of your mouth, and let you breathe. Knowing you can pause anything, anytime, takes away the trapped feeling that drives a lot of dental fear.

We tell you what’s happening before it happens

A surprise is what your nervous system reacts to, so we narrate as we go: what we’re about to do, what you’ll feel, how long it will take, and what comes next. No instrument touches you without you knowing it’s coming. If you’d rather not hear the play-by-play, tell us and we’ll keep it minimal. Your call.

We go at your pace and build in breaks

There’s no rule that says everything has to happen in one marathon visit. We can break treatment into shorter, easier appointments, pause partway through for you to reset, and let you sit up between steps. For many anxious patients, a few calm, short visits beat one overwhelming one.

We make the freezing as easy as possible

A big fear is “the needle.” We apply a numbing gel first so the surface is already numb before any freezing, go slowly, and check in as we work. Once you’re properly frozen, most procedures are pressure and sound, not pain, and we keep confirming you’re comfortable throughout.

We start small when that helps

You don’t have to jump straight into treatment. Many nervous patients begin with a no-pressure consultation: a chance to meet Dr. Kalucha, see the office, and talk things through with nothing happening in your mouth that day. Building a little trust first makes the next step far easier.

When you need a little more help: sedation

For some people, the steps above are enough. For others, especially with longer or more involved treatment or a stronger phobia, sedation can make a real difference by easing you through the appointment. The right approach depends on your health, the procedure, and how you feel about it, and we’ll walk through what’s suitable for you before anything is decided. We’ll never push you toward more than you need.

The training behind the chair

Calm care still has to be skilled care. Dr. Kalucha earned his DDS from Dalhousie University in Halifax and completed a competitive General Practice Residency there, an extra hospital-based year treating complex restorative, surgical, and endodontic (root canal) cases under specialist supervision that most general dentists never do. For an anxious patient, that experience matters in a practical way: more accurate, efficient treatment means less time in the chair and fewer surprises. If a tooth turns out to need a root canal or a more involved repair, it’s being handled by someone with hospital-level training in exactly those procedures. You can read more about his background on Dr. Kalucha’s page.

Catching up after time away

If it’s been a while, the kindest thing you can do for yourself is simply start. We’ll begin with an unhurried exam, show you honestly what’s going on, and build a plan in the order that makes sense, usually getting you out of any discomfort first, then working through the rest at a pace you can handle. Most issues are smaller, simpler, and less expensive to fix the sooner they’re caught, and routine family dentistry visits keep them that way. If you’re worried about paying for care, we can also walk you through your insurance and CDCP coverage so cost is one less unknown.

You don’t have to be ready for everything today. You just have to make the first call. When you’re ready, reach out to our West Abbotsford office and tell us you’re nervous, and we’ll take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

I'm genuinely scared of the dentist. Will you judge me?

No. Dental fear is extremely common and nothing to be embarrassed about, and we hear it from new patients every week. Whether it's been one year or fifteen since your last visit, we focus on where you are now, not on why you stayed away.

Does going to the dentist actually hurt?

You can stop us at any point by raising your hand, a signal we agree on before we begin. We will pause immediately, let you breathe and reset, and continue only when you're ready. You stay in control of the appointment the entire time.

Do you offer sedation for anxious patients?

Yes, sedation can be an option to help you stay relaxed during treatment, and we'll review what's appropriate at your visit. The right choice depends on your health, the procedure, and how anxious you feel. Many nervous patients find that simply knowing sedation is available makes the appointment feel manageable.

Can I just come in to talk before booking any treatment?

Absolutely, and a lot of anxious patients start exactly that way. You can book a no-treatment consultation to meet Dr. Kalucha, see the office, and talk through your concerns with nothing happening in your mouth that day. There's no pressure to commit to anything before you're comfortable.

It's been years since I've seen a dentist. Is it too late?

It's never too late, and avoiding care for years is far more common than you'd think. We'll start with an unhurried exam, show you what's going on without judgment, and build a plan you can handle at a pace that works for you. Most problems are easier and cheaper to fix the sooner you come in.

How much does it cost if I have a lot of treatment to catch up on?

It depends entirely on what's actually needed, which we can only know after an exam, and you'll get a written estimate before any treatment starts. We can also sequence the work over time so it's manageable rather than one large bill. If you have insurance or qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, we'll help you understand what's covered.
