Quick answers
Medically reviewed by Dr. Kalucha, DDSWhat counts as a dental emergency?
Severe or worsening tooth pain, swelling in the face or gums, a knocked-out or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown that's causing pain, and uncontrolled bleeding all count. If you're unsure, call us at 604-856-7860. We'll help you decide how urgently you need to be seen.
Can you see me the same day?
We keep room in our schedule for urgent cases and do our best to see patients in pain the same day. The sooner you call, the sooner we can help and the more options we usually have to save the tooth.
What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it without scrubbing, and if you can, place it back in the socket. If that's not possible, keep it in a cup of milk and call us immediately. A tooth reimplanted within an hour has the best chance of survival.
A dental emergency rarely happens at a convenient time. A tooth cracks on a Sunday, a filling falls out before a trip, or a dull ache becomes impossible to ignore overnight. When that happens, the most important thing you can do is call us at 604-856-7860. Mount Lehman Dental keeps room in the daily schedule for urgent cases, and Dr. Aman Kalucha and our team will tell you what to do right now and get you seen as quickly as possible.
Call first: here’s why
Phoning before you come in lets us prepare for your specific problem and often save you time and pain. We can give you first-aid steps over the phone, judge how urgent your situation is, and have the right time and tools ready when you arrive. If you’re in West Abbotsford and not sure whether what you’re experiencing is an emergency, call anyway. We’d rather help you decide than have you wait at home in pain.
What counts as a dental emergency
Some problems genuinely can’t wait. Call us right away if you have:
- Severe or worsening toothache that isn’t settling with over-the-counter pain relief
- Facial or gum swelling, which can signal an infection that needs prompt attention
- A knocked-out tooth: every minute counts here
- A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth, especially if it’s sharp or painful
- A lost filling or crown that exposes sensitive tooth and hurts
- Bleeding that won’t stop after an injury to the mouth
Facial swelling combined with fever or difficulty swallowing or breathing is a medical emergency. Go to the nearest hospital emergency department or call 911. For everything dental, we’re here.
First aid while you reach us
Toothache. Rinse with warm salt water and take pain relief as directed on the label. A cold compress against your cheek helps with swelling. Don’t rest aspirin on the gum. It can burn the tissue.
Knocked-out tooth. Handle it by the crown, never the root. Rinse gently without scrubbing. If you can, slip it back into its socket and bite softly on a clean cloth. If not, keep it in a cup of milk (or tucked in your cheek) and call us immediately. Teeth replaced within an hour have the best chance of being saved.
Broken or chipped tooth. Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and use a cold compress for swelling. If there’s a sharp edge, dental wax or even sugar-free gum can cover it temporarily.
Lost filling or crown. Keep the crown if you have it. Sometimes it can be re-cemented. A bit of dental cement from the pharmacy can protect the tooth until your appointment.
What to expect when you arrive
Our first priority is getting you out of pain and understanding what’s wrong. Dr. Kalucha will examine the area, take an X-ray if needed, and explain what he finds in plain language. Then we’ll lay out your options, and the cost, before doing anything. Depending on the problem, emergency treatment might mean a filling, a root canal to save an infected tooth, re-cementing a crown, draining an infection, or in some cases an extraction.
Dr. Kalucha’s General Practice Residency at Dalhousie University included managing urgent and complex cases in a hospital setting under specialist supervision. That experience matters in an emergency, where calm, accurate diagnosis under pressure is exactly what you want from the person treating you.
Don’t tough it out
Dental problems almost never improve on their own, and waiting often turns a small, inexpensive fix into a bigger one. A cavity that could have been a simple filling can become a root canal; an untreated infection can spread. Seeing us promptly usually means less treatment, less cost, and a far better chance of keeping your natural tooth.
We also know that for some people, the fear of the dentist is exactly what kept the problem from being dealt with sooner. We won’t lecture you. We’ll focus on getting you comfortable, treating the immediate issue, and helping you move forward.
After your emergency visit
Once you’re out of pain, we’ll talk about preventing a repeat, whether that’s completing a treatment we started, replacing a lost tooth, or catching small issues early at regular checkups. If a tooth couldn’t be saved, we’ll discuss replacements like a dental implant or bridge so you’re not living with a gap.
Dental emergencies are stressful, but you don’t have to handle them alone. Save our number, 604-856-7860, and call the moment something goes wrong. We’re right here in West Abbotsford, ready to help.

Frequently asked questions
What counts as a dental emergency?

Can you see me the same day?
We keep room in our schedule for urgent cases and do our best to see patients in pain the same day. The sooner you call, the sooner we can help and the more options we usually have to save the tooth.

How do I manage a toothache until I can be seen?
Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed, and use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek for swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum. These steps ease symptoms but don't treat the cause. Call us so we can find and fix the problem.
Is a knocked-out or cracked tooth always saveable?
Not always, but acting fast greatly improves the odds. Even when a tooth can't be saved, we can manage your pain and discuss replacement options like an implant or bridge so you're not left with a gap.
What does emergency dental treatment cost?
It depends on what's needed, from a simple filling to a root canal or extraction. We'll explain the cost before treating you, bill your insurance directly where possible, and review CDCP and financing so cost never stops you from getting out of pain.
